The Merry Month of May is Upon Us...
A time to celebrate life and love and all things good.
So come on down to Thornborough Henge and help us to bring in the summer in the festive tradition of Beltane!
The Sacred Brigantia Players present a Mystery Play:
The Fall & Rise of John Barleycorn
(with apologies to Robert Burns, for this twist in the tale!)
We invite children coming to the event to bring water pistols
so that they can participate in the Mystery Play!
On Thornborough Moor did ancient priests,
A stately triple Henge decree,
Where Ure the sacred river ran,
Through standing stones aligned by man,
And down to the restless sea.
Life and times where different then,
For stone age women and their men,
Had no sword and had no pen,
With which to make their mark.
Their fires raged against the dark,
But died away as time went past,
And so the made a sort of ark,
A monument they built to last.
And we can stand within this space,
And loose all sense of time and place,
And wonder at the ancient race,
That once occupied these lands.
And now their work is in our hands,
As incredible as that mey seem,
With the reverence that time demands,
For a society that dared to dream,
For the vision in their stone age minds,
The ambition of their grand designs,
And all the sweat and all the toil,
To build a thing that we might spoil,
If we where to loose the sight,
That we are too a mortal coil,
A fire burning in the night,
A beacon fire burning bright.
And what’s the message that it sends,
To people who, many years from now,
Will come to visit Thornborough Henge?
